Chilean born Winifrede Walbaum, former lead vocals and tambourine in Niña con Frenillos, in 2008 embarked on a new venture: a solo career. What started as a fun way to learn some music software resulted in several songs. Now, these songs are demanding to be transformed into a proper record. The influences are more than evident. You can smell the rawness of Nina Simone - there's a sweet dash of "Tell me more and more and then some" of the American jazz singer in Winifrede's compositions - and the warmth and candidness of Cat Power reflecting over universal subjects: love, broken hearts; the blurry line between happiness and its counterpart versus the masks we use to disguise ourselves as better people. Winifrede's music is not pretentious; on the contrary. Her voice sinks into sweet melodies mixed with nocturnal cadences, transporting us into an almost cinematographic time and space - perhaps an influence of her past formal studies in the format - transforming us into characters within her own stories. A fusion of media, if you will, but nonetheless the "less is more" ethos is clearly present throughout the entire project, and its subtle, elegant musical language. We know we are facing something big when the music we are hearing seems as if it could have been made anywhere in the world. This is the reason why this project needs to become a reality. That, and the fact that renown local musicians have already began working with Winifrede, devoting their time and creative energy into the project. The studio of choice is Estudios Agartha (agartha.cl), already a household name in the local scene for their skillful combination of analog and digital platforms, and thus the final ingredient for a beautiful, successful project that surpasses what we are accustomed to, as an audience, in Santiago de Chile.
